DRUM TECHNIQUE: THE BASICS OF RHYTHM
Drumming is all about control, timing and rhythmic patterns. In the workshops for children, they first learn the basics: stick control and simple rhythms. One of the first techniques that AMI Sound introduces is the paradiddle. This technique forms the basis for many complex rhythmic patterns and helps you to improve your stick technique and coordination.
WHAT IS A PARADIDDLE?
A paradiddle is a drum pattern that consists of an alternation of single and double strokes. The pattern is simple, but provides a solid foundation for developing speed, control and coordination on the drums.
Standard paradiddle:
The pattern consists of four stitches:
R (right) L (left) R (right) R (right),
followed by
L (left) R (right) L (left) L (left).
Exercise 1: Start playing the standard paradiddle slowly and gradually increase your speed. Make sure you execute each stroke equally hard and controlled.
WHY PRACTICE PARADIDDLES?
Practicing paradiddles and other rudiments will not only help you become better at drumming, but will also improve your coordination, speed, and rhythmic accuracy. These exercises are the building blocks of complex drumming patterns and will help you become a more versatile drummer.
Register now for a drum workshop at AMI Sound and discover how you can perfect your paradiddles and other techniques.
